MoneySuperMarket Wakes Skeletor & Domino’s Take A Day Off: 5 Ads You Should Watch Right Now

Every week Unruly rounds up the 5 best bits of creative from Adland so you can catch up on anything you might have missed.

This week’s selection is certainly one the most varied we’ve seen in a while, with ads covering 80’s movies, teddy bears, treehouses and children’s TV villains.

Both Domino’s and MoneySuperMarket take us back to the 1980’s this week, with the former riffing on one of the most iconic movie scenes of all time, and the latter doing something a whole lot weirder.

Elsewhere we’ve got an interesting and unusual ad from 1800Tequila, which somehow manages to channel both Fight Club and La La Land – the brand is also the latest to use original music from Chance the Rapper. Rounding out the list is a genuinely funny series of spots from Pedigree, and a warm and cosy ad from Samsung.

So without further ado, enjoy!

5. 1800Tequila – Hands

This latest spot from 1800Tequila uses the brand’s tagline of ‘refined enough’ to explore the idea of the ‘modern man’ – presenting its hero as a boxer by night and pianist by day with some really interesting visuals. The ad’s strong imagery is backed up by an interesting soundtrack from Chicago-born hip-hop wunderkind Chance the Rapper, and if the brand continues to mash up gorgeous visuals with unheard tracks from world-famous rappers, they could really be onto something.

4. Samsung – Teddy Bears

Tech brands often have to work twice as hard to inject emotion into their ads, which makes this heartwarming ad from Samsung Ukraine all the more surprising. The ad has a simple concept revolving around a small girl washing her teddies, but the swelling soundtrack and muted colours create an unusual and memorable atmosphere.

3. Pedigree – Treehouse

Empty-nest syndrome is well documented, so why not get a dog? That’s the idea behind this pet adoption campaign from Pedigree made up of a number of comic spots – each focusing on an area where man’s best friend is probably better than a kid. The ad’s sombre opening makes the punchline particularly strong, and the idea that you can trade in your children’s belongings for dog toys is undeniably funny.

2. Domino’s – Home For Pizza

80’s classic Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is stuffed full of iconic moments, and this new spot from Domino’s does a great job of paying homage to the movie’s famous ‘race home’ scene. The ad’s star Joe Kerry, of Stranger Things fame, receives a notification that his Domino’s pizza is on its way and charges home through various gardens and streets. The attention to detail indicates real affection for the original, and means the spot is a must-watch if you’re a fan.

1. Moneysupermarket – Epic Skeletor

There’s not much I can say about this insane MoneySuperMarket advert without spoiling it. The brand has a penchant for creating some really weird content, and this spot is certainly no different. The ad stars Skeletor (you know – He-Man’s nemesis) and follows him (it?) as he celebrates getting a great deal on some insurance. It really needs to be seen to be believed, and might just be the funniest spot the brand has ever created.
