Ice Creams & Pipe Dreams: 5 Ads You Should Watch Right Now
Every week we trawl the web for the latest and greatest video campaigns and then present them to you in this tidy list. So settle in, and enjoy our eclectic mix of weird and wonderful ads!
In this week’s round-up we’ve got a moving follow-up to Save The Children’s 2014 campaign and the latest video from Women’s health brand Hello Flo. Our selection of ads also features big cats, a talking pancake and Idris Elba – suffice to say it’s been an interesting week in the world of advertising.
Enjoy!
5. Purdey’s – Idris Elba Presents #ThriveOn
There’s something undeniably likeable about Idris Elba, and Purdey’s (the multivitamin-drink maker) utilises the actor perfectly in its #ThriveOn spot. The ad shows Elba asking members of the public ‘what do you want to be when you grow up?’, and then follows him as he makes one woman’s dream of being a football coach a reality.
4. Save the Children – Still The Most Shocking Second A Day
Save The Children caught everyone’s attention in 2014 with its ‘Most Shocking Second A Day’ campaign. This week they released a follow-up ad, set two years on, which echoes the original by re-imagining the journey of a Syrian refugee from the perspective of a British child. The ad is powerful, thanks to compelling direction, performances and music, and its timely and updated tagline (‘It’s Happening Now. It’s Happening Here’) presents a clear message.
3. Hello Flo – Leaks Can’t Stop Me Now
Hello Flo, the feminine products company, has certainly made headlines in the past thanks to its brilliant ‘First Moon Party‘ and ‘Gyno Camp’ campaigns. This year’s follow-up to those success stories is a slightly more traditional ad that features a group of musical mums singing candidly about women’s health issues, with Hello Flo’s trademark sense of humour front and centre the whole time.
2. Denny’s – Grand Slam: Slamsurgence

American Fast Food chain Denny’s has reported its biggest financial growth in a decade, a fact it’s attributing to its animated ‘Grand Slam’ ad campaign. This week it released the latest spot in the series – ‘Slamsurgence’. The short video features animated versions of Denny’s dishes freaking out after watching a trailer for Independence Day 2 (a nice bit of cross-promotion).
1. Magnum – Release The Beast

Unilever’s luxury ice cream brand Magnum has partnered with MullenLowe and Shazam to launch its latest chocolate-covered treat at the Cannes Film Festival. As part of the promotion, the brand produced this equally luxurious advert featuring women eating ice cream, accompanied by various apex predators, including cheetahs, lions and a convincing CGI Eagle. The ad is pure visual spectacle and certainly worth a watch.
