Mic Drops & Surf Shops: 5 Ads You Should Watch Right Now

It’s been a busy week in AdLand, with a lot of the industry focused on Advertising Week Europe. So with all the talk about ad blocking and programmatic advertising this week, we realise you may have missed some of the latest ad campaigns.

But don’t worry – we have you covered. We’ve spent the past seven days watching the best ads around – and gathered them all in the handy list below.

In this week’s round-up we see Apple’s favourite pop star in another comedic spot and the return of the Evian babies (sans roller skates).

So sit back, settle in, and enjoy!

5. Dove – #LoveYourHair

In Dove’s latest ad campaign “Love Your Hair”, the beauty brand challenges women to wear their hair how they want, rather than being afraid of how it may be perceived.

4. Evian – Baby Bay

When Evian released Roller Babies back in 2009 nobody could’ve predicted just how successful it would be. Entering the Guinness Book of Records as the most shared video of all time, the ad’s combination of humour and CGI-weirdness clearly struck a chord. Its latest ad is a chip off the old block, once again featuring animated kiddies, only this time on surfboards. The ad captures a similar sense of weirdness as the original, and it’s nice to see that the CGI has improved to where the babies are ever-so-slightly less creepy.

3. Beats 1 – Taylor Mic Drop

Taylor Swift returns in a new spot which features the music star singing and dancing to the early-2000s pop-punk classic ‘The Middle’ by Jimmy Eat World – a favourite tune of angsty 90s kids everywhere. The advert is sold almost entirely on Taylor’s enthusiasm for this fairly corny song, and while the share counter isn’t quite rocketing upwards as quickly as it did with her “Taylor V Treadmill” spot, it’s clear why Apple has cemented this partnership with the young singer.

2. American Family Insurance – Free To Dream

American Family Insurance is currently working with BBDO New York on a campaign called ‘Insure Carefully, Dream Fearlessly’. And this clever spot from director Adam Berg captures that message perfectly. Focusing on the dream of a girl who imagines her neighbourhood as the surface of an alien world, the advert blends real life and special effects effortlessly.

1. Amazon Fire – #ShowHole

Binge-watching is a worldwide phenomenon. Thanks to streaming services like Netflix, every episode of every show you’ve ever wanted to watch is now available at your fingertips. But what happens when your favourite show finishes? We’ve all felt that peculiar sense of loss after watching the credits roll for the final time. That feeling is the subject of Amazon’s latest campaign for the Fire TV, a feeling it has dubbed the ‘show-hole’. The ad shows off Fire TV’s ability to recommend similar programs, protecting the couple in the ad from breaking up due to the eponymous #showhole in their relationship.
