But which brands and campaigns were a cut above? Well, in its 2nd annual Unruly Video Sharing Awards (#VSAs) this week, Unruly honored the social video stars of 2014.

Powered by the Unruly Viral Video Chart, the awards are picked by the people, based on the sharing data aggregated from across the social web.

Or more simply, the brands and videos that were the most shared across Facebook, Twitter and the blogosphere.

You may not be surprised to hear that an ad featuring a cute bird makes it to the top of this month’s Global Ads Chart. But what might get you in a flap is that the commercial in question does not feature a penguin (real or imagined).

That’s right, John Lewis’s Christmas ad may have had people from around the world p-p-picking up a handkerchief during November. However, mawkish Monty was only second in this month’s pecking order behind a spot from non-profit organisation, Animal Australia.

Launched on November 17,  “People Being Awesome” attracted more than 2 million shares in its first week alone. It has now racked up an incredible 2.7 million shares, making it the second most shared ad of 2014.

There are no winners and losers on Christmas day, except maybe when it comes to share-happy brands. As with “water cooler events” like the World Cup or the Super Bowl, Christmas is heavily-contested marketing ground, with brands teasing their advertising strategies months ahead of the big day.

Though we’re still weeks away from popping the first box on our advent calendar, plenty of brands have started throwing their novelty Santa hats into the ring. And it’s easy to see why. According to Unruly’s Viral Video Chart, two of the twenty most-shared viral ads of all time are Christmas spots, accruing nearly five million shares between them.

The question is: who’s found a gift in their stocking and who’s found coal? Christmas advertising is a delicate art, and John Lewis’ early contender shows the retailer knows exactly what it’s doing.

October 16, 2014 – A third of moviegoers claim they would buy a movie ticket after watching a trailer or ad online. That’s according to new research by marketing technology company Unruly, which also found that 28% of 1,050 web viewers surveyed said they would rent the film.

Consumers who share movie-related content are almost 6 times more likely to purchase a ticket than those who don’t.  However, the new report – called ‘The Science of Sharing: Movies’ – found the majority of online movie marketing campaigns are not being optimized for sharing across the social web.

Box office revenue in the US alone has slumped 8.8%, with a loss of over $1 billion over the past 24 months, putting increasing pressure on movie makers’ bottom line. The research, which analyzed the most shared movie promos from September 2013 to September 2014, provides actionable insights for studios looking to generate more ROI from their online marketing.

Being one of the world’s coolest brands certainly has its downsides. Just ask Apple. The life of the tech giant is apparently not too dissimilar to that of a medieval monarch: you’re essentially in charge, but that doesn’t stop them from making jokes and unflattering impressions of you behind your back.

So it was hardly a surprise when the launch of the Apple iPhone 6 and 6 Plus last month prompted a predictable backlash from disgruntled journalists and consumers alike.  From U2 to ‘Bendgate’,  Apple know all too well there are always brickbats among the bouquets.
