Crying Tots And B-Ball Shots: 5 Ads You Should Watch Right Now

One brand makes kids cry while another turns one into a sports hero. Well, that’s Adland for you!

After a week watching the best (and sadly worst) video ads on the web, we’ve picked the five essential ones to watch so you can spend the rest of your time enjoying the weekend.

So without further ado, here is our weekly round-up of the five ads you should watch right now.

Enjoy!

5. Nike – Short A Guy

With Peter Griffin’s favourite jam Surfin’ Bird playing, you can’t help feeling anything but upbeat watching Nike’s latest commercial.

In the exciting spot, we see just about the coolest kid ever being approached to join a basketball game with a team who are “short a guy”. This is where the fun starts.  From there, the teen finds himself on a roll of being tagged-in to play alongside some of the world’s biggest sports legends, including baseball’s Mike Trout and Garrett Richards, volleyball’s Misty May-Traynor and  NFL’s Andrew Luck, all of whom happen to also be “short a guy”.

Luckily for them, the kid just so happens to be an amazing at just about every sport they throw at him. And what a coincidence, he fits perfectly into all their spare Nike gear too!

4. Coca-Cola – The Text

Coke has been exploring true friendship in its recent ‘Crossroads’ series, encouraging teens to be kind to each other and stand up for friends when it matters most.

The latest video in the three-part series is an absolute gem and no wonder – the soft drink giant teamed up with Oscar winner and LGBT activist Dustin Lance Black to shoot it, the very man who directed the award winning film ‘Milk’, which stars Sean Penn.

The ad is almost eight minutes long, but trust us, the heartwarming culmination is absolutely worth the wait.

3. Médecins du Monde – Make A Child Cry

No-one wants to make a child cry, but according to Médecins du Monde it could very well mean saving their life.  Shockingly, one child dies every 7 seconds due to lack of medical care.

The international humanitarian non-profit uses shock tactics in its campaign to highlight the importance of vaccinating children. We see children crying out in pain before it is revealed that they are crying from medical treatment, something a lot less sinister than if they were one of 4 million children around the world who die from preventable diseases every year.

2. Sony – Invisible Man

If you follow our weekly round-up column ‘6 Branded Vines You Should Watch Right Now‘ you’ll be very familiar with the star of Sony’s latest ad.

Zach King shot to fame for his incredibly creative use of special effects on short-form platform Vine, and these days he’s in high demand from top brands looking to impress their consumers.

The clever twist in Sony’s ad for the Action Cam is that for once the Vine magician didn’t need to do much post-production.

We caught up with the pro-Viner last year, check out the interview here.

1. Samsung Mobile – Surf – We Are Greater Than I

Samsung has been unstoppable lately with its ‘We are Greater than I’ campaign.  First, there was the legendary partnership with Marvel Comics, where Lionel Messi and a host of other sports stars were turned into super heroes.  Then there was the partnership with Trek Racing Factory ahead of the Tour de France, which featured in last week’s round-up.

Now, in partnership with the World Surf League, the mobile giant has dropped this epic short movie that celebrates how the surfing community is connected, intrinsically co-dependent, and tied together for better and for worse. The video is spectacularly shot and makes us want to hop on a surfboard right now and catch some waves (if only we could).

Kudos to creative agency 72andSunny!
